Höhepunkt der Zertifizierungswelle - gebremst, die Zahl der nach der
Normenserie ÖNORM EN ISO 9000ff zertifizierten Unternehmen steigt aber
kontinuierlich an.

It seems like the certification boom, which started in
1995—the climax of the certification wave,—is slowing down. But the
number of the ÖNORM (Austrian Certification System) EN ISO 9000ff
certified businesses continuously increases.

| Per Ende 1998 dürften rd. 2000 österreichische
Unternehmen ISO-zertifiziert sein; 82% davon zählen zu den Klein- und
Mittelbetrieben. Diese Entwicklung wird durchaus unterschiedlich bewertet.

By the end of 1998, about 2000 Austrian businesses required ISO
certification. 82% of these businesses were small and medium-sized. These
changes are evaluated in different ways.

Despite the variety of methods and strategies used, particularly
in relation to the motives and profit expectations of companies, the results of
earlier studies show common characteristics. Organizational improvements,
increased employee morale and customer satisfaction, as well as higher
competitive advantages—these are the essential goals the companies want
to achieve with ISO certification.

As a rule, in the previous Austrian surveys only those people that
represent the quality management of the certified companies were questioned on,
how these goals could be effectively achieved. This does not exclude
methodically determined possibility of subjectively distorted results.

von Wettbewerbsvorteilen zusätzlich operationale Indikatoren herangezogen

gerichtet werden, sondern vielmehr an die Betroffenen selbst.

Concerning the obtainment of competitive advantages, additional
operational criteria must be used to avoid the distortion of the results.
Furthermore, those who are directly involved, but not the administrators or
quality managers must be questioned about employee or customer satisfaction.

| Des weiteren hat die Analyse der bereits existierenden Studien und
die Auseinandersetzung mit der relevanten Literatur gezeigt, dass eine
Evaluierung zertifizierter Unternehmen nur dann sinnvoll ist, wenn
Vergleichsdaten einer Kontrollgruppe nicht zertifizierter Unternehmen
vorliegen. |

Additionally, analysis of existing studies and the discussion of
the relevant literature show that the evaluation of certified businesses makes
sense only when there is data for a control group—a non-certified
company. |
